QUALITY TIME TOGETHER (NOT!)

Kristi Neace, wife of Officer Richard Neace

Union, MO, Police Department

WE NEEDED quality time together, so my officer husband suggested I ride with him for part of his shift. I thought, Sure, I’ll see what he does for a living and, besides, it’ll be a romantic two-hour ride under the night sky. Boy, was I wrong!

Within minutes we were dispatched to a purse “snatch-n-grab” at the bowling alley. Then came the biggie: Another officer in pursuit of a fleeing robber called for backup. In a flash we were off into the dark night, lights flashing and sirens blaring. As we neared “g-force speed” down a secluded road, the other officer radioed that the suspect had turned around and was now heading in the opposite direction. With that, my husband “flipped a U” and sped like mad the opposite way. As for me, I was praying in a loud voice to spare us from any oncoming traffic or an unsuspecting deer that I knew might jump out in front of us any second. Once wasn’t enough for my husband; three times he made a U-turn hoping to head off the robbery suspect. Finally, we topped a hill and saw a phalanx of emergency equipment: squad cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and so forth. The suspect had lost control of his car and plowed into a guardrail. In the process he ran another vehicle off the road and down an embankment, trapping the people inside. Fortunately, God definitely had been in control, for the people were not seriously injured and the man was caught.

We stopped, my husband got out to do his duty, and I tried to dislodge my fingernails from the dashboard! Even though my nerves were shot, I tried to regain my composure before he got back in the car. I was hoping that might be the end of our “quality time,” but off we went across town to a domestic call. After a few more calls, I informed Rick that though I thought he was completely wonderful and heroic, that I had to make a trip to the little girl’s room, and that would be the end of our “quality time” ride-alongs! I thank God there are trained officers like Rick who can handle the pressure and the stress; I could never do the job!
