THE VOICE

“But it was so real and loud”

IS SATAN real? Ever been asked that question? Ever wondered yourself?

Seeing the suffering and violence that crack cocaine produces removed any doubts about the damage caused by drugs. While responding to a call for a twenty-five-year-old, the voice of Satan once again rang loud in my ears. We found the dirty, unkempt, roughed-up young man behind an old, abandoned building, crying. He grabbed my hand. “I need help. I can’t go through what I just did.” He shared how he tried cocaine for the first time the night before. “I’ve been on the streets for two weeks but never before touched drugs. I was planning to go back home and start over. But this morning something told me I had to have more of the stuff I tried last night. I saw a lady walking on the street and that same voice told me to take that lady’s purse so I could get some more of that stuff. The voice kept yelling at me to go—‘go take it now.’” He placed his head in his hands and said, “I just freaked—I can’t live like this.”

“The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.” (Psalm 29:4)

I clutched hold of his hand and shared how the Lord had kept him from assaulting that woman. I further told him the voice of temptation he heard was straight from the mouth of Satan himself.

“But it was so real and loud.”

I responded. “That drug makes Satan’s voice come alive in your mind. I have no doubt you actually heard it. But the awesome power of God is far greater than anything Satan can say or do.”

I looked him in the eye. “Are you a believer?”

“Yeah, but I’ve lived far apart from God.”

“That’s doesn’t mean he’s lived far apart from you. I’m sure he sent me here today.”

The man consented to seek help from a health facility. As we parted, I reminded him that his greatest help, Christ, was already inside his heart.

Three days later he completed his treatment and returned home.

Satan is out to destroy both the body and the mind. The only hope of victory for the body and the mind is Christ in the heart. The only way to completely overcome Satan’s attempt to defeat a person with any mind-deceiving, flesh-devouring, addictive drug is through Christ.

Have you tried Jesus? Are listening for his voice over that of his adversary?

Prayer:

Lord, it is your voice I seek to hear over any other.
