In chapters five through seven of Matthew’s gospel we find Christ’s discourse commonly known as “The Sermon on the Mount.” Jesus delivered this sermon at the beginning of his ministry, when He was popular and had a large following. A common refrain of Jesus’ message is “the kingdom is at hand.” Throughout the sermon, Christ presented the requirements for entry into this kingdom: a right relationship with God characterized by righteous living exemplified in the Beatitudes.

If Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount to Jewish followers looking for an earthly kingdom, how does His message apply to us? In Mocha on the Mount, Sandra Glahn examines the most famous sermon of all time and its many modern day applications. She has adapted this study on the Sermon on the Mount in such a convenient way that it can be read during brief lulls in our daily schedules that present opportunities for meditation and study (breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, etc.).

Each weekly study in Mocha on the Mount begins with an introduction to be done on Sundays, followed by five days of studying Scripture and making pertinent life applications along the way. The weekly studies are concluded with fitting devotional readings to be read on Saturdays. These devotionals contain an overview of what has been studied throughout the week along with some closing thoughts and a prayer.

Sandra’s unconventional thought processes regarding the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes are sprinkled throughout the study as she shatters preconceived notions about what Christ teaches both Jews and Gentiles in this address delivered on the Mount of Olives more than two thousand years ago.
