In 1996 Chattanooga became the only mid-sized cities in America with no abortion clinic. The National Memorial for the Unborn was created on its former premises to offer peace to post-abortive parents, to remember babies who have been lost to abortion, and to offer the hope of salvation. Each plaque represents a lost life; behind each plaque is a story that needs to be told.

There are so many women who have kept their abortion a secret, who have perhaps never told their parents or the baby's father or their own husbands. Their good intentions to solve a crisis pregnancy have left them with deep wounds and unresolved emptiness in their heart; it creates an unfathomable sense of loss. Through God's tender mercy, our contributors have received forgiveness.

The book concludes with several stories of adoption, to show that this life giving choice is happening all over the world--even for children who are born with severe handicaps) and that these families are made whole through offering life.

What we have found through the ministry of the National Memorial for the Unborn is that healing is possible through claiming one's child, naming one?s child, and honoring one's child.

Empty Arms is intended to share the painful reality of post-abortion and its effects on families. The time is now to face the ugly truth about the effects of abortion on millions of real women and men. We have included stories from people who have faced the serious consequences of their "choice." In many cases, the effects have been severe (infertility, drug abuse, divorce, multiple abortions). In other situations, the heartache has left an unexplained void in their hearts. Each story shows that no one is released from the consequences afterwards. Abortion does not fix a problem pregnancy.
