ANGELS IN DISGUISE

To some we are heroes, but on that special Saturday we received a new title: “Angels”

SATURDAYS at the firehouse tend to be a day without normal training. One Saturday, special medical training was scheduled to update our skills regarding emergency childbirth. Despite the grumbling, we embarked on several hours of enhancing our knowledge of emergency labor and delivery of babies, thinking how seldom we need these techniques.

“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)

Later that Saturday, a call came in for a woman, Colleen, having a baby at home. When her labor pains began two weeks early, her husband, Kyle, reluctantly agreed to take her to the hospital, but only after he took a shower. While in the shower, Colleen’s contractions came quickly. As she went to the bathroom to encourage Kyle to hurry, she sunk to the bathroom floor screaming in pain. Kyle scrambled from the shower and immediately raced to the phone to call 9-1-1.

The fire department dispatch system sounded the alert tone and said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we actually delivered a baby after just spending six hours in a refresher class on this very thing?” Little did I know how prophetic the dispatcher’s words would be!

When we arrived on scene, it was obvious the child was going to be delivered in the home. Just when everybody and everything was in place for a safe delivery, a lively, screaming, beautiful baby boy entered the world.

Picture this: a bathroom with a woman, newborn baby on her chest, lying on the floor; her husband sitting in the tub, glowing in the delight of seeing his firstborn child come into this world; two EMTs sitting beside the lady, attending to mother and child; and three firefighters standing just outside the bathroom door, looking in with grins a mile wide.

A week later, Colleen, Kyle, and baby Derek stopped by the fire station to say thanks. The firefighters had placed a blue stork decal on the side of the ambulance in honor of Derek’s birth. During the visit, Colleen shared that as she looked around, just after the birth of her son, she saw six smiling, rejoicing men in that bathroom and was reminded of the joy of God’s angels spoken of in Scripture.

To some we are heroes but on that special Saturday we received a new title: “Angels.”

Prayer:

What a blessing it is, Lord, to serve you, and if some see me as an angel in disguise, what encouragement that is to me! May I always strive to be worthy of such an honor.
