JOY’S SMILE

Officer Mark Dennis

Franklin, LA, Police Department

EVEN THOUGH Franklin isn’t a large city, there still are a large number of domestic calls. As I became familiar with the town, it wasn’t long before I was making “repeat calls” to “regular customers.”

One day I was called to “Joy’s” residence. Even before I reached her house, from my car I could hear her screaming. She said she didn’t want her kids anymore and would I take them? I asked her to calm down and tell me what the problem was. She kept screaming, saying that her children kept the house a mess and wouldn’t listen to her. I told Joy this was her problem, not ours. She did not want to hear that! She said that one day I’d find her with a big knife sticking out of her chest that would have been stuck there by her kids. Trying to keep a straight face I told her, “Then that would be a police problem, and you should call me then.”

Her “monster kids” were three girls, ages 6, 8, and 10. Speaking in a deep voice I told them, “God wants us to obey our parents. Do you want to live a good and long life?” They all nodded their heads, so I continued, “You will if you obey and respect your mother.” Then I told Joy I would be back the next day.

My son had some VeggieTales videos, so I took one for Joy’s children to watch. After that I took one or two of the videos to them every shift I worked. Soon the girls were glued to the TV, watching the tapes over and over and learning about God. His message was new for both them and Joy, and the mother could hardly believe the change in her children.

Joy moved away, but late one evening I stopped a vehicle with a headlamp burnt out. The driver was Joy. Most driver’s license pictures look like mug shots, but Joy’s had a big, beautiful smile. When I asked where she got that smile, she said, “From you!” I thanked her and reminded her to walk with Christ. As she drove away I was reminded of God’s power to restore, renew, and give hope. I thanked God for the opportunity to minister in the lives of people like Joy and her children, and for how modern methods of teaching, such as VeggieTales, can help make the “old, old story” fresh and new for this generation.
