APPROVED WORKMEN

Daily challenged to study and live by God’s Word

OCCASIONALLY firefighters receive orders or memorandums from the fire chief explaining a new fire department policy or procedure. Many times, as the firefighters read and discuss them, heated discussions ensue. Some simple and easy-to-understand orders regarding topics such as new hydrants, promotions, or special events, they agree with and move on. Occasionally the fire chief puts out a difficult order that creates controversy. After careful study, some accept the special order and agree with it. Others interpret it as bad or even potentially ruining the department. But ultimately the chief made the decision, and firefighters must follow those orders.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

As Christians, God’s Word is our ultimate life guide. Whether we strongly agree with or struggle with some of God’s guidelines and ways, he is our Chief. “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight … to the praise of his glorious grace” (Ephesians 1:4, 6). As his chosen, we need to read, study, and obey his Word.

As firefighters/EMTs we need to spend time studying to improve our skills, to prepare for a class, or to take a promotional test. Typically the more we study, the better we will do on that test.

The Christian life is similar to those tests we study for. The people who “pass” and do well are the ones who put honest work into their studying.

Have you ever worked with Christians who truly have their lives all together? Chances are they are students of God’s Word. That’s not to say they’re perfect; they’re just trying to live by what the Bible says. Often I feel as if I’m in the spotlight when I share who I am in Christ and refuse to take part in workplace activities that go against God’s Word. Ever been there? It can be quite uncomfortable, challenging, and humbling. It is then I more fully understand my need to know the Bible. To correctly handle his Word, I know beyond a doubt I must read, study, and apply it as I would a work training manual. My life depends on it.

Prayer:

Help me to be as diligent a student of your Word as I am of my fire/EMS training manuals. May I correctly handle your Word and effectively apply the fire and medical skills I’ve learned.
