GET BUSY

No one knows how many days we have left

MANY TRAUMATIC events caught my attention in the world news. One item told about recovery crews who found a body authorities believed was that of a sixty-seven-year-old Montgomery man whose car was swept into a large concrete drainage ditch by floodwaters. First responders tried without success to get the driver out of the vehicle when it went into the ditch. Another reported that swine flu had sickened thousands of people in thirty countries. Still another related that storm debris blocked roads and damaged houses when six tornadoes touched down. The firefighters made at least fifty water rescues. Other news reported thefts, murders, domestic quarrels, abuse, and other ungodly events.

As I was reading of these tragedies, I was overcome with the realization of our earthly mortality and how fleeting life is. I bowed to pray for these victims and as I did, God’s warnings came to mind. God clearly states that no one, not even angels, or his own Son, knows when the coming of the Son of Man will be. He related that the people of Noah’s day were so ignorant and immoral that “they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man” (Matthew 24:39). Then he clearly warned, “Therefore keep watch” (v. 42).

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42)

This passage is a warning about a storm that is coming upon this earth. Not a small storm in which we can run outside and fix things, but the wrath of God. It’s a reminder that the end is coming and we need to be prepared. Will a good friend of yours, or someone God brings into your life, be left? Will you be left?

I was challenged and I challenge you: Get busy! No one knows how many days we have left in order to get our lives on track and get right with Jesus.

Prayer:

Your Word is clear, God, that your Son, Jesus, will return. No one knows when that will be, but I accept the challenge to get busy. Guide me as I seek to know your will for my life, to live according to your Word, and then to share your love and truth with others.
