APPREHENDED BY PRAYER

Captain Gary Del Greco (Ret.)

West New York, NJ, Police Department

A FEW MONTHS after I accepted Christ as my Savior, my church had a study on prayer, which had a profound effect on my thinking. At the time I was sergeant on the midnight shift, and one night we were briefed on a person wanted for homicide. Not long before, he had entered a home and stabbed a girl several times, and then stabbed her 10-year-old brother, who had come to her aid. He had entered the house through a window and tried to start a fire in the attic. Apparently he had been stalking the family, and I wanted to end the ordeal—tonight!

As I set up the night shift lineup I started to pray, “Dear God, please let this man be caught tonight so we can remove him from terrorizing this family.” We had detectives stake out the house hoping he would attempt to enter it again, but without success. The suspect lived in New York City, and the last bus back to the cCity left at 3:30 a.m. Since we hadn’t caught him by then, we decided he must have taken the bus home. With that I called off the surveillance, but left a post car to keep tabs on the house.

About 3:50 a.m. I decided to take a ride around the town. As I left headquarters I turned toward the main street of town and noticed a man duck into a store’s doorway. I decided to check him out. After backup arrived and we approached him, we realized he fit the description of the person we wanted. At headquarters the detectives verified his identity. On his person we found a knife, a toy gun, and a glass cutter, and on his pants were trace evidences of insulation from the attic where he had tried to set the home on fire.

While making out the arrest report I remembered my prayer of several hours earlier, asking that he be caught, never thinking I would be the one to make the capture. Here he had made it through our surveil lance, and I caught him only a block away from police headquarters! God had delivered him into my hands! I received an award for the capture and wore it with pride the next twenty years. Whenever asked about it I always gave the credit to the Lord, saying, “God gave it to me!”
