Prepared by Prayer

General Stonewall Jackson had an African-American servant on his staff who had become so accustomed to his ways that he was able to discern whenever the general was about to start on an expedition. Someone asked him how he knew the general was about to depart without telling him.

“Oh, that’s easy,” answered the man. “The general prays every night and morning. But when he is on the eve of an expedition he prays two or three times during the night. I pack his baggage, for I know he is going out.”

Jackson knew the secret to winning battles. He got on his knees beforehand and prayed earnestly. Notice he did not wait until he was in the midst of the fight. Jackson knew he would need a great deal of wisdom and strength for the battle ahead, so he prayed twice as hard before he went into battle. It would be a step forward in our Christian growth if we would learn to pray beforehand.

In Ephesians 6, Paul used the analogy of a Roman soldier’s armor to our spiritual armor to fight against Satan’s attack. Before a Roman soldier went into battle, he put on each piece of armor with care so he could deflect any of the enemy’s arrows. One way in which we can put Satan and his demons on the defensive is with the weapon of prayer. The weapon of attack against Satan in today’s verse is prayer. According to Paul, we need to pray and keep on praying. God blesses persistent prayers.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:18
