I Care
FORMER MARINE Steve Wiese rarely talks about his Vietnam experiences. Recently, however, he was having dinner with his wife and friends on a day that happened to be the ...

I Care

Taken aback, Wiese composed himself and replied quietly but firmly, “I care.” That was his only response, although his wife added, “He’s spent over 30 years trying to forget about it. There are some things you just don’t forget.”

After this incident, Wiese thought a lot about the men who fought in Vietnam and the question, “Who cares?” He concluded in a thoughtful article for other veterans,

I believe the people that loved them care, their families care, the men that knew them that stood shoulder to shoulder in combat with them care. It is our responsibility to remember. So every year I will continue to make a toast to these men, the ones that made it back, and the ones that did not.

The need for others to care about the good things we do is not peculiar to veterans. Unfortunately, appreciation from others is often in short supply in just about every aspect of everyday life. Rather than resenting that fact, we can simply try to do better ourselves in showing appreciation to others. A friendly comment or thoughtful question to anyone we meet or someone who serves us in some way can make it clear we care about them. The important people in our lives deserve even more. We pray God will always give us the urge and the ability to assure every one of our family members we love and care deeply for them.
