God Won the Argument

GOD, I don’t want to talk to him. You can see he’s angry, probably hostile, and I’m sure he doesn’t want to talk about spiritual things!” I had gotten gone off duty after a long shift; all I wanted was a cup of java at the local “Stop and Rob.” It wasn’t a nice neighborhood, but the price was right. Now here was this angry young fellow leaning against the building, and the Holy Spirit said, “Talk to him!”

Finally I gave in, said I would do it and be nice, even though he’d probably smart off at me. I said a little prayer and launched into what I hoped would be a short conversation: “How are you doing, my friend?” (I used my “friendly witnessing approach” because it’s usually more effective.) There, I’d done it. Now I’ll hear his invective, he’ll turn away, and I can get my coffee. That didn’t happen, so I went on. I asked him how he was doing, his name, what was going on in his life, about school, parents (no father, of course), and the like. I don’t think many had taken time to show interest and concern for him, and he started to melt right in front of me. As I turned the conversation to spiritual things he showed a genuine interest. After I told him the story of Jesus on the cross, he said his grandmother had told him many times about Jesus but he had never trusted him as his Savior. He did that day, right outside the convenience store. I asked him to go tell his grandmother about his decision, and before he parted, we wept together and hugged (I’ll bet that’s the first time he ever hugged a cop!).

That night I had a big apology to make to God, who once again had proved me wrong. I recalled the words of the prophet Isaiah: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8, 9 NKJV). Sometimes I do get “stinkin’ thinkin’.” When that happens I’m learning the best thing to do is simply listen and obey God; he never makes a mistake!
