STOPPED IN HIS TRACKS!

Officer Steve Huskey

Grand Junction, CO, Police Department

FOR MANY, the period from before Thanksgiving to after New Year’s Day is not a season of joyful gatherings and celebrations. Holiday shopping brings out thievery in many forms—purse snatchings, car break-ins, shoplifting, home burglaries, etc. It also brings up old hurts and bad feelings, especially in households torn apart by infidelities, divorce, and remarriage.

On December 22, 1996, I was working as the night shift supervisor for the sheriff’s office. An officer in one of our towns asked for assistance in locating and contacting a man who had been in a domestic dispute with his estranged wife.

As a couple of other deputies and I got to the town, I saw the suspect driving his car back in the direction of his wife’s house. When I tried to stop the man, he took off at a high speed, leading us on a seven-mile chase to a neighboring town. When we got in the town, I called off the pursuit for safety reasons. However, we continued to check the area for him, and located him on a dead-end road. Another officer was in front of him and had just turned around, so he was blocked both ways.

Realizing there was no way out, the man pulled into a driveway that trapped him even further. After he stopped his car, I got out of mine and ordered him to exit his. He responded by firing a rifle at me. The other officer and I returned fire and found our mark: He was dead. During the investigation that followed, it was determined he probably intended to go back to his wife’s house to kill her. Also, the rifle bullet he’d meant for me was found in the dirt where I had been standing.

In debriefing after the shooting, the psychologist told me I would suffer serious side effects from the shooting, but that did not happen. Instead, over all these years, God has given me peace that a bad situation was stopped before it got worse. I have tried to love and serve God all my life, and he has protected me through my twenty-six years in law enforcement. At the Christmas season each year I am reminded of God’s grace and mercy for me. It also gives me pause to pray for the children of the deceased man, not out of guilt, but that they will choose to follow Christ rather than the path their father chose.
