Fulfilling Our Destiny (General J. E. B. Stuart’s Parting Words)

Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart lay mortally wounded having been struck down by a Union bullet. In the closing hours before death, pastors, comrades, and President Davis gathered around his bed as he spoke his last words.

About noon Thursday, President Davis visited his bedside, and spent some fifteen minutes in the dying chamber of his favorite chieftain. The President, taking his hand, said, “General, how you feel?” He replied, “Easy, but willing to die, if God and my country think I have fulfilled my destiny and done my duty.”

We all have destinies to fulfill in God’s service. The apostle Paul knew he had a race to finish.

Are you fulfilling God’s purpose for your life? If you are not doing what God means for you to do, you will have a void, an emptiness, and dissatisfaction that will gnaw at you until you get on the course God has laid out for your life.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith.

2 Timothy 4:7
