Hope for the Troubled Heart

Alansa Sterrett Rounds wrote of stirred emotions as cavalrymen galloped into the night to join the army of Northern Virginia.

May 1861

Saddest day I ever saw … Mr. Arnold (Methodist minister) offered prayer. Then followed the sad farewells of mothers, wives, sisters, sweethearts and friends! Many a strong man quivered with emotion and tears fell from eyes unused to weep! We watched the cavalrymen as they mounted, whirled into line, waved their hats, and galloped out of sight, leaving aching hearts to mourn their departure. They belonged to the army of Northern Virginia and were bound for Virginia.

My godly grandmother told the following story about my uncle in World War II:

Roland Tuley fought in strategic battles against Nazi Germany. On one occasion, he camped with his army buddies on the banks of the Rhine River. Word came that the Germans were advancing up the river. The Americans were outnumbered. The officers asked the soldiers to burn their identification because they would either die or be captured. During those crucial hours my grandmother in southern Indiana had a strong feeling that her son was in great danger. She wept and prayed for him until early morning. She later said, “I prayed until I got peace and arose to fix coffee. When I walked into the hallway, I heard a deep voice say, “Let not your heart be troubled!” She stood there for a moment, realizing that she had just heard God speak. From then on she knew that Roland was going to be alright. Later she received a letter from Roland talking of the events that took place and assuring her that he was safe.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
