GOD, PUT OUT MY FIRE OF JEALOUSY

A letter written on the tablets of the human heart

MY YEARS of experience, including fighting major factory fires, were insufficient to prepare me for the worst fire I’d ever face a fire that raged inside my heart because of jealousy. On my own, I couldn’t put it out.

In spite of my professional success and being born into a Christian family, my jealousy led to telling lies against others, mostly high achievers. Because of this sin, I frequently avoided attending church. On one infrequent visit, the preacher read 1 Corinthians 16:15–20 and explained that true believers in the Lord Jesus are the temple of God. He said heaven has no room for jealousy, an emotion that leads to many other problems.

The message lingered in my heart. I was convicted, but uncertain of what to do. A visiting evangelist was another one of God’s tools. He stressed the dangers of jealousy and the need to pray for protection, which I did. Though not fully delivered, I started to get away from the problem. To enrich my spiritual life, I joined groups in my local church, attended Bible studies, and began learning more about God’s love, grace, and forgiveness.

“You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (2 Corinthians 3:3)

Still burdened by jealousy and sin, I struggled for years until I attended another meeting. The topic was, “A Christian who is saved is a letter to the world,” from 2 Corinthians 3:1–6. “This letter,” the preacher explained, “is not written with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts… . Jesus is the best letter you can read. He faced many trials but never gave up.” As the preacher spoke of the sorrow caused by sin, including jealousy, and said people who are full of jealousy and lies are cheating themselves, my heart was touched. I stayed to tell the speaker about my sinful problems. He prayed for me. I confessed my sin before the Lord Jesus and accepted him as the Lord and Savior of my life.

The Lord continues to help me overcome my challenges and develop a new attitude as a father who seeks to love and teach my family members and share with them the love of God through our Saviour, Jesus Christ. I now participate in church programs with an open mind, without jealousy and lies.

Prayer:

Lord, may my letter be a reflection of your love in my life. I thank you that you can rid me of the darkest sins, making them white as snow.
