Returning From the Dead
JOHN BENNETT was a medic with a unit of the 11th Infantry Brigade occupying a hill northwest of Tam Ky. One day a powerful thunderstorm came up, and lightning began hitting ...

Returning from the Dead

Once airborne in a medevac helicopter, Bennett passed out again. The helicopter crew thought he was dead and radioed the report to base. He was delivered to an aid station near the brigade command post where he soon regained full consciousness, and, in fact, found he was suffering no ill effects at all. Knowing his buddies were still on the hill without a medic, he asked to go back right away. Upon his return, mouths dropped open. There had been reports he was dead, and everyone was amazed he was there, alive. “They had all my gear packed,” recalled Bennett.

I once had a similar experience during a brief return to base at Dong Ha after a long operation in the field. I met two fellow officers who expressed amazement to see me alive. They told me the “word” that I had been killed in action had gone around days before. This was one of my most vivid experiences with how rumors start and perpetuate themselves. When solid information is lacking, there always seems to be someone eager to fill in the blanks.

Since then, I have seen this all-too-human tendency at work often and have learned it never hurts to check out the facts about things I hear. Jesus warned his followers this same phenomenon will occur frequently at the time of his return.
