On Fire for the Cause

The Northern Armies appointed an estimated three thousand chaplains to the Union forces. The largest number of chaplains serving at any one time was over 1,079 on active duty. These divided into 930 regimental chaplains, 117 hospital chaplains, and 32 post chaplains.

The Confederate records are incomplete, but an estimated six hundred to one thousand chaplains served and twenty-five known chaplains died in the war. Young Confederate chaplain John J. Hyman was on fire for Christ, and he would do anything for him. He proved this by preaching five or six times a day in a Georgia brigade revival. He worked so hard that he was about ready to break. One day Hyman was in the water baptizing fifty converts when the orders came for him to go to Gettysburg.

The Civil War and the prospect of a great loss of life gave chaplains a sense of urgency for the spiritual well-being of the soldiers. Chaplain Hyman was on fire to win the Southern soldiers to Christ. Perhaps the Lord gave Hyman a premonition on the eve of Gettysburg that he must win as many men as he could.

We too should have a divine urgency to win the lost. How many around us are but one-step between this world and eternity? Jesus said that we must work for the night is coming. One day more may be one day too late.

Do you have friends or family members who need to know Christ? Don’t delay telling them about him, for “night is coming, when no one can work.”

“As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.”

John 9:4
