Baby Kathleen
KATHLEEN CORDS-EPPS is a mother of three daughters, now living quietly in a small town in northern California. Her journey to this place in life is an amazing story.

Baby Kathleen

In 1969 a group of 1st Division soldiers were moving through a Vietnamese hamlet destroyed a short time before by the VC. In the midst of the devastation, the soldiers heard a baby crying and, after a search, found a tiny three-week-old infant girl still clinging to her dead mother. They took the baby to the 3rd Field Hospital, where a nurse named Donna Rowe took over. She named the baby Kathleen and had the Catholic chaplain baptize her so she would be taken in by a nearby Catholic orphanage.

Sometime later, a naval officer named Marvin Cords heard about Baby Kathleen during a church service in Saigon. This was the beginning of a long quest by Cords to adopt Kathleen and bring her home to America. It took a year of paperwork and the signature of the president of South Vietnam to finalize the adoption. At last, this young girl completed the journey from a devastated Vietnamese village to a life filled with opportunity as part of an American family.

This story is not only an example of how adoption can be an amazing lifesaving event. It also gives a small insight into the nature of God’s love for us. Although we are God’s creation, we are not automatically his children. Through his Son, however, he gives us the opportunity to be adopted into his family as his own: “So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir” (Galatians 4:7). Like the baby Kathleen, we are able to go from a life of separation and isolation to one of inclusion in the greatest family of all. We are also able to claim our inheritance: a joyful hope in an eternal future of love and acceptance.
