GOD BUILT THE HOUSE

Sergeant David M. Greenhalgh (Ret.)

FCPO Reconstruction Coordinator

ONE SATURDAY afternoon in October, Lieutenant Greg Herman walked into the office I’d been assigned in the temporary quarters of the Gulfport, Mississippi, Police Department. Katrina had reduced Greg’s house to nothing but sticks holding up a roof. Even though the mortgage still had to be paid, he felt all was lost—it would have to be bulldozed!

In my spirit I felt it could be rebuilt, so we sat together and wrote down what was still useable: foundation, septic system, driveway, framing, plumbing, some of the ceilings and wiring, and the roof. Approximate value: $60,000! Greg and I believe this was a “rolling revelation” from God, as neither of us had any construction experience. Now we needed someone who did! An experienced carpenter who’d come to the stricken area to volunteer his services confirmed our thinking. Youth for Christ volunteers spent three separate days removing all the debris from his house and property, and God began providing miracles. A Chicago cop repaired the roof so we could work under it. A church in Colorado provided a heating and air-conditioning unit. A contractor repaired the plumbing and wiring, and supervised the reconstruction. A wonderful crew of Canadian cops worked non-stop for ten days doing most of the rebuild. The house frame had shifted, and God provided the heavy equipment needed to move it back. Because of Greg’s 6’9” height, special doors were needed. A Florida donor had hand-carved doors built to order and delivered them to the home. Another donor furnished the siding. By the time Greg and family moved into their beautifully restored home, it was better than before, and vividly demonstrated God’s love and mercy. The smile on Mrs. Herman’s face said it all: God not only provided the house, he also healed her family’s hurt from feeling they had lost it all.

I kept the back of the police report where we made our notes that Saturday so long ago. A contractor would view our jottings as quite simple, but to Greg and me it was a profound revelation from God.
