Letters to My Sons

Letters from Charles Lones and his wife Rebecca to their sons, Jacob and Jeremiah, were found carefully kept in Jacob Lones’s trunk with this note:

Family legend says that both boys—Jacob, age 19, and Jerry, age 17—left their home at night to join the Union army in Kentucky after a silent farewell to their mother as she slept. Jacob survived the war and returned home in May, 1865. Jerry died of fever at Triune, Tennessee, May 22, 1863. He is buried in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

A list of admonitions given to Jacob and Jerry by their parents were discovered in a copy of the New Testament with the initials “J. K. L.” and “J. J. L.” and bearing the date, April 1862:

  1. We want you to place your souls in the hand of the Almighty God.
  2. Never drink spirituous liquors unless advised by a doctor.
  3. Never go into gaming with cards or otherwise.
  4. Never associate with the drunkard or lewd.
  5. Take care of all you earn and never keep more than 500 on hand.
  6. Stay together until you return or are separated by death.
  7. If either of you should die or be killed, I want the body put in a metallic coffin by the other and carefully put away so that it can be removed home at some future day. This is our dying request to you.

Charles and Rebecca Lones tried to build commonsense principles and spiritual core values in their children. They knew that Jacob and Jerry would have many temptations.

As Christian parents, we have a God-given responsibility to train a child in the way he should go. Not only are we to teach the Word of God to our children daily, we are also to lead them by example.

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
