Something of A Miracle
AARON CARTER was a door gunner on a UH-34 helicopter based at Khe Sanh in early 1967. Late one afternoon his crew received an emergency call to extract a reconnaissance team ...

Something of a Miracle

Within seconds the helicopter settled into a small landing zone covered with a dense undergrowth of eight-foot-high elephant grass. Incoming fire immediately became intense. Small arms and .50 caliber machine-gun fire ripped through the ship. Carter could tell by the enemy tracers what direction to fire his machine gun, but the elephant grass severely limited his ability to see anything else.

Suddenly, Carter experienced one of the most frustrating moments in his life when his gun jammed. This had never happened before. A few seconds later the pilot decided he had to depart the zone and applied full power. As they gained a few feet of altitude, Carter looked down at the elephant grass a short distance from where they had just lifted off and saw the six-man patrol. He realized in that moment he would have killed every one of them if his machine gun had not jammed. Amazingly, once they cleared the zone, his weapon started firing again. In a classic understatement, the Marine said, “To me, this was some kind of miracle.”
